Studio Brief 2 - Leeds Library Book Cover - Final Designs

I have chosen this as my final design as I think it is the most eye catching design I have come up with that fits the content of my book well, and it was agreed that this was one of my strongest designs in the crit. I developed it slightly, as suggested in the crit by overlapping the squares more so that when screen printed it will create a third colour. I am happy with this as my final design as I feel it is more interesting and more eye catching than the original design and students are more likely to pick it up. I have designed the full cover with front, back and spine. I decided to have the same design on the back but with just the outline of the squares. I only had an online copy of the original book and the front and back are pretty minimal without a lot of text so I have kept my design similar to this.

I found screen printing quite difficult at first as i have never screen printed before so some of my first attempts turned out a bit blotchy, it was also very tricky to get the text lined up properly so it has overlapped in some places, but I quite like the effect and you're not going to get the same results screen printing as you are printing digitally.

I really enjoyed screen printing and producing work by hand as opposed to printing digitally and am keen to use this method more in future briefs.

Studio Brief 2 - Leeds Library Book Cover - Development

I developed this idea so that it met the requirements for the brief and only used two colours. I did this by adding more squares so that I was able to include all the information from the book cover onto the squares. I still feel this is too similar to one of Josef Muller Brockmanns posters.

I decided to develop this design a bit further by changing the colours and just having a stroke on the rectangles. I used the developed design for the interim crit and this was a favourite within the group, however someone mentioned that it may be moving away fromt the grid too much and that you don't really get diagonal grids.

I decided to change the colours within this design to something a bit brighter as I had used the same colours within most of my designs. In the interim crit this was a number of peoples favourite design however the level 5 students mentioned that it may be hard to screen print due to the thin lines, so as I have never screen printed before I think may rule this design out as I don't want to make it too difficult for myself.

I decided to add more squares to this design and space out the title a little more as I felt that by having all the content in a square in the middle of the a4 page didn't look quite right. This design received positive feedback in the interim crit as it conveys grid systems and the content of the book well. It was suggested that I overlap the squares a little more to create a third colour within the design.
