Studio Brief 3 - Initial Ideas & Interim Crit

I have started by playing around with some of my ideas for my page layouts in Indesign with some of my images and  some placeholder text. This has helped me to visualise what my book might look like.  When laying out my columns of text I don't want there to be too much text in one space so instead of placing large columns of text next to each other I offset them slightly inspired by some of the page layouts I have found in my research. I think this creates a more balanced layout and is not too daunting for the reader.

I also want to use some of the images of the back of my postcard as full page images so that the reader is able to read the messages on the back however I’m not sure whether I will be able to do this in my final design as the printer we are printing our books on does not print full bleed images. I also really like the idea of spreading the images across both pages but I’m not sure whether I will be able to do this with my final design for the same reasons.

In the interim crit the group liked the layouts I had so far and they liked having the back of the postcards as full page images for the same reasons I did. It was suggested that I use a handwritten typeface as it would fit in with my subject well however a number of people in the group didn’t like this idea as they felt that with the handwritten postcards it would be handwriting overload and I agree with this. Most of the group agreed that it would be much better to use a sans serif more minimal typeface to contrast the handwritten postcards.  I feel like some colour needed to be injected into my designs as I feel they look dull and the group agreed that this would make it more interesting.
